Description of our School

The school in Athens has two divisions: The Master's Academy of Fine Arts which meets on Thursdays and Master's Academic Partners which meets on Tuesdays.  Both divisions work together for a full course load of classes for our students.

The Master's Academy of Fine Arts in Athens has 3 levels accomodating the talents of our diverse student body.  The levels are as follows:

Exposure Level (ages 4 -18)  In future years this level will only go up through age 11.

This level is meant to expose students to the fine arts.  Based on one of six time periods of history, students get a class in the history of the time period, art history of the time period, music history of the time period and drama.  These classes meet for 25 weeks and flow in a 15/10 week schedule which means that for the first 15 weeks, students learn about musicians, artists, history, and drama of the time period and for the last 10 weeks, students elect classes for a more "hands-on" application.  The elective classes result in an end of the year program showing the parents what they have learned.

Enrichment Level (ages 12 - 18; 7th grade - 12th grade)

This level is meant to delve deeper into the fine arts through skill based classes more applicable to this aged student.  Students begin this level with foundation classes in Art, Music, Drama, and Worldview.  In following years students will continue to take classes in Art, Music, Drama, and Worldview with classes increasing in skill level.  This level meets for 28 weeks.

Elite Level (ages 13 - 18; 8th grade - 12th grade)

This level is designed for high school students who wish to pursue fine arts study in college or students who have a strong desire to have a well-rounded high school experience.  Students begin this level with  Art 101/102, Theater 101/102, Music 101/102, and Worldview.  After they have completed this battery of classes they can then declare a major in art, music, or drama (with possibly film and writing in the future).  Students who have declared a major will then begin a course load of classes specific to that major. In addition to the classes listed, students in this level are also encouraged to take various application classes such as: Master's Concert Chorus, Master's Drama Company, Master's Philharmonic Band, Master's String Ensemble, Master's Cinematography, and/or Master's Art Guild.  Students also get private lessons in piano, guitar, voice, or art (more private lesson choices will be developed based on the needs of our student body).  This level meets for 28 weeks.

About the Master's Academy of Fine Arts

The Master's Academy program is divided into two full fine arts schools designed specifically for home schooled children ages K-5th grade and students in 6th - 12th grade. Meeting just one day per week, children are exposed to the arts from an historical perspective. Each year the arts are taught from a specific time period beginning with Ancient Civilizations, then moving on to the Medieval/ Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Modern periods through a six year cycle. Each year is self-contained so a student need not be involved for the full six years, nor do they need to begin at the Ancient Civilizations period to gain a benefit from the program.

Throughout the year, students concentrate on building foundational principles in our four core classes which include:

  1. History - A combination of arts history and world history so that the students understand where "all the pieces fit."
  2. Art - Learning of basic art skills and terminology as well as learning about the artists, and mediums used during a specific time period.
  3. Music - Exposure to the basic elements of music reading, rhythm and notation, as well as learning about the composers, and styles of music from each period and learning to make music.
  4. Drama - This is exposure to the basics of stage terminology as well as theater games, and literature of the period done in a group setting to learn basic drama skills.

In addition students will pursue electives in areas which they have found to be interesting to them in order to gain more exposure and skill in those areas. These options vary from location to location and by time period.

The costs vary slightly at each location, with an average price of $7.00 per class hour, and an annual registration fee per student. Discounts, additional fees, and payment schedules are at the discretion of each location. Days and times also vary by location. For more information on exact pricing, locations, and meeting times, please call the director of the school nearest you, or call the Master's Academy corporate office at  770-286-0782 or by E-mail at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Time Period Overviews

The Ancient Time Period (Creation - 400 A.D.)

Year one of the cycle begins with creation and goes to the Fall of Rome. In this cycle, children are exposed to the arts from a Biblical foundation with the arts of all the ancient civilizations being studied from God’s perspective rather than through the eyes of our current culture which tends to praise the worship of false gods through the arts.

Our spiritual target in this time period is the building of a foundation, for if we do not understand both God’s foundational truths for the arts, as well as the foundational principles for creating the arts, we are doomed to create more of the mindless drivel which consumes our society today.

The Importance of Arts Education

(Even if your kids aren't “Artsy”)

I can imagine what you are thinking after reading the title of this article…. “Oh great, another guilt trip article from a homeschool  leader on what I’m leaving out of my children’s education and how it will negatively impact my family for the next five generations. I can hardly wait to read this one! Who really cares about the arts anyway?

We have science, math, history, English, foreign language, Bible study, sports, chores, character studies, community service, missions trips, church functions, political campaigns, and growing our garden to worry about, who has time for the arts? They just aren’t that important, and if we leave them out no one is going to notice. All of that stuff is just a distraction to real learning anyway and we’ve got to be serious here. After all, I’m trying to get my child into a good college and I just can’t spare the time from serious academic pursuits for something as non-essential as the arts.” Well, I’m not here to guilt you into yet another activity, but I am here to challenge your thinking on the importance of arts education and possibly to shake up your educational paradigm a little bit.
